Enlargement of jaw muscles can cause a square face shape (wide face). If the enlargement is one-sided, facial asymmetry will result, and if the growth is bilateral, the appearance of a square face will be created. The cause of the phenomenon is unknown, but when it is symmetrical, it is commonly regarded as an unesthetic trait that is within the norm.
The currently accepted therapy for this problem is botulinum toxin injection into the enlarged muscle(s). Botox weakens the muscle and reduces its contraction during action, thus decreases its mass and "flattens" the facial contour. In asymmetric facies, the Botox is injected into the enlarged side in order to reduce it and achieve a balance between the two sides.
